Club Champions 2016

Posted on Updated on

Congratulations to the Wee County Club Champions for 2016.

Winning the Ladies Title after being in the frame for the last couple of years is Fiona Nicholl, well done Fiona. After the 2016 Marathon times were collated Christine Caldwell collected 6pts for her time at Boston, which drew her level with Shona Campbell so they’ll have to share 2nd prize.

Ladies results are:

1st Fiona Nicholl

2nd Christine Caldwell and Shona Campbell

3rd Claire Campbell-Swan

The Men’s title once again goes to Bob Warnock after another great year. Like the ladies, the men too have two guys sharing the prize for 2nd place – Graeme Wilson and David McNeil. However, David can console himself for not overtaking Graeme because he’s the Club Men’s Most Improved runner Champion for 2016.

Men’s results are:

1st Bob Warnock

2nd – David McNeil and Graeme Wilson

3rd – Alastair Outred

Finally the Most Improved Runner’s League and a big Congratulations to Heather Cassidy, who won the Ladies title for 2016 and David McNeil, who had a massive 7PBs in 2016 and (as mentioned above) shared 2nd Place for the Men’s title.

Most Improved Runner League Winners:

Ladies – Heather Cassidy

Mens – David McNeil

Well done to all!!

All the GP Race results are now current with the exception of the Parkrun event (will be posted shortly).

The latest event was at Knockhill last night where a few people ran for the Club for the first time with a couple of outstanding results.

Kevin Boyd, finished in a great time of 24:02 mins to take 2nd place in the Men’s Club race. Karen McCluskey went one better though in taking first place for the Ladies. Well done to both.

The 2016 GP Club Championship Tables have been updated and posted. With a few races to go Fiona Nicholl is out in front for the Ladies with Bob Warnock ahead for the Men. It looks like they’ll both be hard to catch but it’s still all to play for especially for the places.

You can view the Results under Membership/GP Standings.

The Need for Speed?

Posted on Updated on

One of the questions put to the coaches recently was “why do speed sessions, such as 100 metre relays or 20 * 1 minute repeats with 1 minute recoveries, when most people are training for longer distances?”

Well first of all speed sessions are integral to helping you get faster as a runner and also in improving your running form. Elite athletes running from 5k to Ultra Marathons will include such sessions in their repertoire.

As a club we have a lot of members, all of whom have different goals. For some its getting better at the 5k Parkrun, others it may be doing a 10k or half marathon, whereas some are only interested in longer and more extreme events like marathons or ultra marathons. For that reason we try to keep the training sessions as varied as possible and hence include the speed sessions to provide a well rounded and comprehensive package that will help members over all distances.

In order to give more detail on speed sessions one of our coaches, Richard O’Grady, has written an excellent breakdown of what they are and how they benefit you. It’s well worth a read. It’s now on the new Coaches Page or by clicking on the following link – Speedwork Sessions – Why?
