On Monday 14th September, Pamela Robson, Scottish Athletics Paralympic Manager, introduced a group of Wee County Harriers to guide running for visually impaired runners.
We learned about the different techniques and tools running guides use to communicate with their visually impaired running partners. We then tried a range of specialist glasses designed to simulate different levels of visual impairment, helping us understand some of the challenges a visually impaired runner may experience. This experience left us with enormous respect for visually impaired and blind runners, and for the people who guide them.
After the fantastic session with Pamela, we now have a group of members keen to become guides and support visually impaired runners in the future. This enthusiasm is another step towards making running more inclusive, accessible and welcoming for everyone, and we are proud to be taking it.
We would like to say a huge thank you to Pamela for sharing her knowledge and experience with us, and for giving us such a valuable and inspiring insight into guide running. We are grateful for her support and the positive impact of the session.
